Flag football streaming gear guide

Put your iPhone on an Insta360 Flow 2 Pro gimbal. Screw the gimbal onto a 9 ft stand. Set it up at midfield. That costs about $200 and films the whole game from above the sideline.

Only filming from behind the end zone? You can start without the gimbal.

Got your gear? Here’s how to go live from your phone.

The BreakAway Vision setup

For filming from the sideline. Buy these two and you have everything.

Our pick

1. The gimbal

Insta360 Flow 2 Pro

iPhone gimbal · ¼"-20 base

~$160

Holds your iPhone and turns side to side so you can cover the whole field from the sideline. Keeps the picture steady when the stand moves in the wind. It also charges your iPhone during the game. Run a cable from the port on its arm to the phone, and it charges until the gimbal is down to 30%.

2. The stand

NEEWER 9 ft Stand

Up to 8.5 ft · holds 11 lb

~$40

About 9 ft tall with the gimbal on top. That's high enough to see over the parents and across the whole field. It takes a minute to set up.

Other tripod options

All three screw into the same gimbal. The drawings are to scale next to a 5'10" parent.

Smaller and cheaper

GEEKOTO 77" Tripod

Up to 6.4 ft · ¼" plate · 3.7 lb

~$60

Gets the iPhone just over the parents' heads and folds small enough for a backpack. Good if nobody stands in front of you.

Screws straight into the gimbal

Higher

Cisian 13 ft Tripod

Up to 13 ft · ¼" screw · air-cushioned

~$70

Most of the 16 ft view for less money. High enough to film the whole field from the sideline or behind the end zone. Hang a sandbag on it when it's windy.

Highest

RAUBAY 16 ft Tripod

Up to 16 ft · ¼" and ⅜" screws · holds 8.8 lb

~$190

The highest view you can get, and the best one from behind the end zone. It's heavy and needs a sandbag when it's windy, so it suits whoever films every game.

Filming from the end zone? The gimbal is optional

Behind the end zone the play comes toward the camera, so an iPhone that stays still can still get the game. Put it up high, point it down the field and press record. This is the cheapest way to start. The gimbal still makes end zone video better. It turns side to side to cover more of the field, keeps the picture steady when a tall stand moves in the wind, and charges your iPhone. On the sideline you need it, because the play moves left and right past you and an iPhone that can't turn misses half of it.

End zone only

1. The stand

NEEWER 9 ft Stand

Up to 8.5 ft · holds 11 lb

~$40

About 9 ft tall with the gimbal on top. That's high enough to see over the parents and across the whole field. It takes a minute to set up.

2. The phone mount

Phone tripod mount

Clamps any iPhone · ¼" hole

~$10

Without the gimbal, this is what holds the iPhone. It screws onto the top of the stand.

Nice to have

You don't need these to start. Each one fixes a problem you'll run into at a game.

Power bank

~$30

The gimbal can charge your iPhone. This is for a long tournament day, or the end zone setup where there's no gimbal.

Fast charger + cable

~$25

Charges the gimbal and the iPhone the night before.

Stand sandbag

~$15

Hang it on a leg so the wind or a loose ball can't knock the stand over.

Setting up at the field

  1. Pick your spot

Midfield on the sideline needs the gimbal. Behind the end zone works with or without it.

  2. Set up the stand

Screw the gimbal onto the top of the stand until it's tight. Spread the legs wide and hang a sandbag if it's windy.

  3. Plug in your iPhone

Optional. Run a cable from the gimbal to your iPhone and the gimbal charges it all game.

  4. Connect and follow BreakAway

Connect your iPhone to the gimbal, then follow the instructions in the BreakAway app. That's all you have to do.

Questions

Yes. The gimbal has a standard tripod hole in the bottom, and every tripod on this page has the matching screw on top. You don't need an adapter.
