You'll need
- A phone with the BreakAway app
- Staff access for everyone recording results
- Room for your longest sprint and the jumps
The tests, the workflow and what is in the app today are all on the Combine page. For what recruiters look for, see Colleges & scouts.
1.Pick your tests
Web or phone
BreakAway suggests seven tests for flag football. Pick the ones you want for each combine.
- 10 yd Sprint: Acceleration off the line.
- 20 yd Sprint: Short-range speed, the distance most plays are won over.
- 40 yd Sprint: The classic straight-line dash.
- 5-10-5: The pro agility shuttle: 5 yards, 10 back, 5 to finish.
- Max Speed: The highest speed an athlete hits. No set distance.
- Vertical Jump: How high, straight up.
- Broad Jump: How far forward, from a standing start.
Tip: Not sure where to start? Use a preset, like Football Combine.
Want to test something else? You're not limited to these seven.
- Pick from the library: Choose Add metrics on your combine and search BreakAway's metrics.
- Make your own: On the web, open Metrics and choose New Metric. Give it a name, a category and a unit.
Number and rating metrics can be recorded on the phone at your combine.
Tip: Use a BreakAway metric when one fits. Your own version can't be compared with athletes in other organizations.

What each test records, up close. 2.Plan the space and the order
Plan the order first. A good order keeps athletes moving, not standing in line.
Then the space:
- Sprints: A straight lane as long as your longest sprint, plus room to slow down.
- 5-10-5: Its own short lane.
- Jumps: A flat spot. That's about it.
Tip: Decide your re-run rule now, before the first athlete shows up. It's much easier than making one up mid-line.

3.Line up your staff
Web or phone
Everyone recording results needs staff access to the group.
- Open Roster, then the Staff tab.
- Tap Add staff member.
- Add a name and an email or phone (one is required).
- Pick the Data Entry role. It's the one for combines.
They get an invite. They show as pending until they claim it.
Tip: Adding the whole crew? Tick Add another staff member to keep going.
More phones, more stations. Other staff open the combine and tap Join Testing Session.

4.Create the combine
Web or phone
- Phone: Tap Run a Combine.
- Web: Create event on your group's Events page. Combines are listed as Camp/Combine.
Then:
- Pick the group (required).
- Name the combine (required) and set the date.
- Add at least one test. The combine can't start without one.
Visibility decides who sees it:
- Public: Anyone with the link.
- Unlisted: Group staff only.
- Private: Only you.
Tip: No groups to pick from? Ask your organization admin to add you as staff.

5.Build the roster
Web or phone
Add athletes before testing day, so check-in goes fast. You can:
- Load the whole group at once
- Pick athletes from the group roster
- Reuse the roster from a past combine
- Quick-create someone who isn't on the roster yet
A jersey number set here is for this combine only. It doesn't change the athlete's profile.
Tip: 50 or more athletes? Upload a CSV on the web. It's faster than tapping through on a phone.

6.Open registration and check athletes in
Web or phone
Want families to sign up and pay? Open the Registration tab on the web. Set up:
- Sessions, with ages, gender and a capacity
- A price per athlete, and who pays for Premium
- The questions you want to ask
- A waiver, which a guardian signs
Families register and pay in one go. Each one gets an Apple or Google Wallet pass.
On testing day, staff scan the pass at the table, hand out jerseys and snap a check-in photo. It works with no signal.
Tip: Registration is optional. A combine runs fine on the roster alone.

7.Start the combine and run testing
Web or phone
On testing day, open the combine and tap Start Combine.
- Start testing on a test.
- Pick the athlete.
- Record the result.
Each test uses its own tool:
- Stopwatch: The sprints and the 5-10-5.
- Tape measure: The jumps, in feet and inches.
- Keypad: Anything else, like your own radar gun or timing gates.
The live dashboard shows who has tested. Families can follow a live leaderboard in the app as results come in.

Each test has its own tool, built into the app. 8.Handle re-runs, odd numbers and bad signal
Phone app
- Re-run: Record it again from the athlete's result.
- Odd number: If a result looks off for that test, the app asks you to double-check it. So a typo doesn't land on the leaderboard.
- No signal: Keep going. Results save on the phone and upload when you're back online.
The app shows how many results are still waiting to upload.

9.End the combine
Phone app
Last athlete done? Check first: every staff phone should show Synced.
Then tap End Session on the live dashboard and confirm.
Ending is final on the phone. After that:
- No more results, athletes or tests
- Results can't be reopened or edited on the phone
- Results are shared based on the combine's visibility

10.Send every athlete their results
Web or phone
When the combine ends, the app offers to send results right away.
- Phone: Choose Send Now. Pick the look and the metrics, check who gets them, and send. Or choose Send Later.
- Web: Share Report Cards opens a three-step wizard.
On the web:
- Pick a card design.
- Choose the metrics. Remove, add or drag them into order. A live preview updates as you go.
- Select the athletes, or all of them. Choose whether to notify parents. Send.
Each athlete gets a report card with their numbers. It stays on their profile.
Tip: No signal at the end? The cards wait and send when you're back online.

11.Work the results
Web or phone
The finished combine opens on its results:
- Records of the day for each test
- A full leaderboard, filtered by age and gender
- A results table you can sort by any column
On the web:
- Results: Leaderboards, charts, an age filter and Export CSV.
- Data Entry: Enter or fix a result in the grid.
- Analytics: Track athletes across combines: Team Trends, a PR Board and Leaderboards.
Combine results and game stats sit on one athlete profile. Coaches and colleges see the whole athlete.

What a flag football combine is
A combine is a testing day. Every athlete runs the same tests, like sprints, the 5-10-5 shuttle and jumps. So you can compare speed, agility and power on the same numbers.
Game stats say what happened on Saturday. A combine says what an athlete can do. A kid can have a quiet game and still be the fastest one on the field.
Who runs one
- Coaches: At tryouts, camps and practice.
- Clubs, leagues and high schools: To see a whole group on the same numbers.
- Colleges and scouts: Read the results, next to a full season record.
In BreakAway, a combine belongs to a group. Anyone with staff access to that group can create one and run testing.
What is in the app today
Everything above is in the BreakAway app today: seven tests, the built-in stopwatch, tape measure and keypad, a live leaderboard, report cards when the combine ends, and setup, data entry, results and analytics on the web, plus registration with Wallet check-in. The AI speed video and the AI jump camera, which mark a result Verified, are part of Premium.
Statting the games too
A combine shows what an athlete can do. Game stats show what she does with it. The two sit on the same profile, and statting a game happens in the same app. Read how to stat a flag football game.
