The situation
A serious program with nothing to show for it.
Girls flag football in Illinois is exploding, and Oak Park River Forest is one of the programs driving it: three teams, a full fall schedule, and a head coach who advocates for the sport across the state. What the program did not have was a record. Seasons of Friday games, athletes improving year over year, and nothing an athlete could point to when it mattered.
There was a wrinkle, too. Illinois plays flag its own way: a full 100-yard tackle field with its own first-down structure, a wrinkle every Illinois coach knows and almost nobody builds for.
What happened
He did the setup. We shipped his rule set.
This is a self-serve story, which means the honest version of "what we did" is: not much. Jim did it.
He ran his own practice game in the app's practice mode before committing, then got his staff set up across all three teams.
He built the program's entire season schedule himself in the web app.
He used BreakAway as the sign-in table at team photo day, having every athlete enter her own info so he never had to load a roster by hand.
He presented BreakAway to the parents of all 100+ athletes himself at the program's preseason meeting. Nobody from BreakAway was in the room.
He told us about the Illinois format, and the 100-yard rule set went from his phone call to shipped in four days, in time for his season opener.
The result
The cards did the rest.
The season is young and the program is already running on it: games statted by his own staff, box scores and recaps after the final whistle, and stat cards landing with athletes who had never had one before. After his second statted game, Jim called.
You guys hit a home run with this. All of my girls were coming up to me asking what this card you sent me is. It's awesome.
Then he opened the game review in the web app and summed it up in one word we will not argue with: "This is a gamechanger."
Why it worked
If you coach a program, here is the part to steal.
One presentation from Jim to his own parents did what nobody at BreakAway could have done. When stats come from you, the coach, they are team-official, and families get on board on the spot.
Schedule, rosters, staff training, the parent pitch: Jim did all of it himself, on his own timeline. If you can run a practice, you can run this, and the practice-mode dry run is exactly where he started.
Illinois plays a 100-yard format, so Jim said so, and the rule set went from his phone call to live before his opener. If your league plays something nonstandard, ask. That is how the Illinois format got in.
One coach, three teams, a whole program on the record. And every opponent on his schedule is about to see what their own athletes' stats look like.
