Success Story · High School Coach

Chris Estrada got statted in Indy. Then he took it home.

Chris Estrada coaches SoCal Reign, one of Southern California's serious girls clubs, and the Western Christian High School girls flag program. His club's games got statted at the NFL FLAG Championships in July. By August, he was statting his own season, from his own sideline, himself.

The situation

A coach who had already tried everything.

Chris Estrada is not new to wanting stats. He had used a stat app before, one that charged him five to six dollars per player and was such a chore to run that he quit and went back to watching film with an Excel sheet. That is where most flag coaches live: they know exactly what a record would do for their athletes, and every tool that promises one costs too much, in money or in Saturday attention, to keep.

His daughter Maliyah was already tracking her stats on BreakAway, and at Summer Series he had quietly used the live game view for his own purposes. In his words: "I don't want to go up to the coach and ask what's the score. I pulled it up a couple times, like, alright cool, we're winning."

What happened

Indy first, done for him.

In July, SoCal Reign went to the NFL FLAG Championships gunning for the TV bracket, and their division was the one BreakAway statted end to end. Chris's team got the full treatment without lifting a finger: play-by-play, box scores, stat cards for the roster, highlights the club reposted. His athletes came home from the biggest event of the year with a record.

Then fall season arrived at Western Christian, and there was no crew coming. So he picked up the phone and did it himself.

He statted his preseason game in early August, then started setting up his JV team too.

Four games in the first nine days of the season, statted from the sideline. After each one: the box score, a written game recap generated from the play-by-play, and stat cards for the roster.

He is putting the stats where recruiters look. Chris is testing BreakAway's MaxPreps export, which sends the season's numbers to the site college coaches and state record-keepers already check.

The result

A season on the record, nine days in.

The record is already doing what an Excel sheet cannot. In the one-point win over South Hills, his quarterback threw for 328 yards on 31 completions with two touchdown passes and a rushing score, and his top receiver caught 14 balls for 187 yards. Every athlete on the roster has a season building under her name, and the written recap of each game lands while the team is still celebrating.

If you just slide your finger, that's so easy. You may be off by a yard or two, but it's gonna give you a good indication and you can move on to the next play.

His next move is already planned: recruit his team parents to stat, "a lot better than having a piece of paper," and run an offseason combine so the girls can see their progress through the training block.

Why it worked

If you coach a program, here is the part to steal.

Chris paid per-player for an app he abandoned. Statting on BreakAway is free, and the finger-slide is fast enough to keep up with a live drive. The comparison is not close.

Watching your own team get statted at a tournament is the fastest way to understand what your season could look like. If BreakAway is statting an event you attend, claim your team and look at what comes back.

Stats that live in an app are proof. Stats that land on MaxPreps are proof where college coaches already look. If you coach high school, that pipeline is the whole reason to start now.

Chris went from paying for stats, to quitting stats, to getting statted, to statting. The last step took him one preseason game to learn. Your first game is this weekend.
