Flag football age divisions and youth rules
Youth flag football groups players by age. NFL FLAG leagues serve ages 5 to 17. In its leagues, 8U and younger do not rush the passer. USA Flag suggests a running clock for ages 5 to 12. Ball size also depends on age.
Younger kids play a simpler game. Knowing your division's rules keeps practice on target.

NFL FLAG
NFL FLAG leagues serve players aged 5 to 17, with boys', girls' and some coed leagues.
At 2026-27 regional tournaments, a player's age on August 1, 2026 sets the division. Ages are checked through National Sports ID. Rosters hold up to 10 players and 2 coaches. Coaches must be 16 or older.
In league play, divisions of 8U and younger (and 1st to 3rd grade) do not rush the passer. In tournaments, 8U and older may rush from the 7-yard line at the snap.
7U and 6U (1st grade and below)
7 and under, or 1st grade and below
No no-run zones: teams may run anywhere.
No rushing the passer unless the offense makes a legal handoff in the backfield.
One coach per team may be on the field before and after the snap. During the play, the coach keeps a safe distance.
If the snap to the quarterback hits the ground, the down is replayed for free. That can happen once per down. A second drop in a row uses up the down.
Defenders line up at least 5 yards off the ball. Inside the 5-yard line, that drops to 3 yards.
8U (2nd and 3rd grade)
8 and under, or 2nd and 3rd grade
